Stem Cells For The Heart

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

Stem Cell developments are emerging at a rapid rate.  Enormous progress is being made in the field of adult stem cells.  Diane Sawyer announced details about the first clinical trial using adult stem cells for the heart in 2011.  With just 16 patients taking part, the results were remarkable.  See the benefits that 68 year old Mike Jones received in just 6 months.

Now 2014, three years on, the biggest ever stem cell trial involving heart attack patients has just got underway.  This study involves 3000 patients in 11 European countries.  Based on previous studies, it is set to show very promising results.

All the patients will have standard treatment to widen their narrowed arteries, which involves inserting a small tube called a stent.  In addition, half the patients will have stem cells taken from their bone marrow and injected into their heart.  This will happen within days of them suffering a heart attack.
